This is the first vineyard-designate wine from winemaker Milla Handley’s 7 1/2 acre home vineyard. It is named after her late husband, Rex S. McClellan, who planted the upper portion of the vineyard in 1999 and the lower portion in 2001. It was indeed a labor of love. He planted about 5 1/2 acres of Pinot Noir, choosing clones 115, 667, and a small amount of Pommard. Rex dedicated the remaining two acres to Pinot Gris, one of his favorite wines. RSM’s location at 850-950 feet elevation affords the visitor breathtaking views, but it is a challenging location to maintain. Milla has risen to the task; the vineyard consistently yields high quality grapes.
Clone type, vineyard site, and careful winemaking all combine to give the RSM Pinot Noir a unique flavor profile. Chocolate aromas predominate, with a faint whiff of lavender. Black cherry flavors are enhanced by a pleasing minerality. Its weight, length, and well-integrated fruit flavors make this wine the perfect accompaniment to roasted meats. A simple roast chicken would allow the wine to take center stage.
We only made 100 cases of this special Pinot Noir, and are making it available exclusively to Cellar Club Members * until July 20, 2008.
