New Drought-Tolerant Planting in front of Handley’s Tasting Room!
In April, Handley gardener Linda MacElwee worked with Arturo Bucio, of Bucio’s Landscaping, and a great support crew to put in a new drought-tolerant, mixed with natives, planting just in front of our tasting room. Linda did the research and the design, acquired the plants, and oversaw the installation. Arturo brought in his backhoe to remove the old landscape of daylilies and Phormiums (New Zealand Flax) and to install new French drains at the base of the slope before the new planting went in. We’re pleased to report that the daylilies, and any other plants that were salvageable, went to good homes. Linda expects that Handley’s water use for the new landscaping will be 30-50% less than the previous plantings. Most of the new species we planted are not only drought tolerant, but are butterfly-, bee-, and hummingbird-friendly. So when you’re in the neighborhood, please come by for a picnic and enjoy watching the wildlife peruse our new garden!
