Orange is the New White at Handley Cellars
Orange Muscat is a white grape variety and it is new to our portfolio at Handley Cellars. It is one of our small special edition productions and it is one of our focus wine this month.
Very little is known about the origins of the Muscat grape (France? Italy?). It does have transmutations including Orange Muscat, Black Muscat and Muscat Canelli.
It was popular in France at one time, is grown in the Veneto region of Italy (Moscato in Italy), and has made its way to Australia and North America (California, Oregon).
Muscat is generally made into wine with some degree of remaining residual sugar. Some signature aromas and flavors would be floral nuances, citrus, honey and stone fruit like peach or apricot.
The Handley 2013 Orange Muscat is made from 100% organically grown grapes from the Nelson Vineyard in Hopland. It has 1.20% residual sugar which results in bold fruity flavors with a hint of sweetness and a touch of acidity.
This wine pairs well with pork dishes such as carnitas or pork al Pastor. It can also work as a dessert wine, or as a delicious summer sipper, well chilled.
Our first pairing recommendation is on the savory side and comes from the website rubiesandradishes.com:
EASY SLOW COOKER MAPLE ORANGE PORK SHOULDER
2.5-3lbs. pork shoulder, cut into several big chunks
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 cup of fresh squeezed orange juice
1 tablespoon maple syrup (make sure it is 100% pure maple syrup)
1 apple, peeled and chopped*
1 Rub the pork with the salt, pepper and sage. Place it in the slow cooker.
2 Add the apples, orange juice and maple syrup.
3 Cook on low for 6 hours. Once it is cooked, use 2 forks to pull the pork apart.
4 Enjoy your meal!
*please note, we added a couple of steps:
• seared the pork first on all sides after seasoning with salt and pepper
• added a total of 2 cups of chicken broth to the slow cooker;1 c. at the beginning and kept adding more when the liquid got low
• we also omitted the apple, but that is your choice
Try the pork with petite steamed potatoes and leafy greens on the side. Or, make yummy pork tacos to pair with the Handley Orange Muscat.
